Natural Resources South Australian Murray-Darling Basin (Natural Resources SAMDB) are encouraging community members to come along to an information day about the Wyndgate property on Hindmarsh Island.
Interested community members can drop in and discuss their thoughts about the Wyndgate property and will have the opportunity to learn more about the property and its natural values.
Natural Resources SAMDB is about to embark on the development of a biodiversity and land-use plan for the property and are asking community for their input.
Making up nearly 25% of Hindmarsh Island, Wyndgate covers 1,170 hectares at the island’s eastern end.
Natural Resources SAMDB Wyndgate Project Officer, Mark Phillips said the property was purchased by the South Australian and Federal Governments to protect its high conservation values and allow the enhancement of those values through the restoration of natural ecosystems.
“Wyndgate contains significant wetlands which are part of the Coorong Lower Lakes Wetlands of International Importance, as declared under the Ramsar Convention,” Mr Phillips said.
“It supports a range of native fauna including 125 species of birds, 21 species of fish and five species of frogs, a number of which are species of state or national conservation importance.”
Significant revegetation work has been undertaken on the property and will increase further with a large revegetation program to be conducted in winter 2016.
Those unable to attend the information day are encouraged to contact Wyndgate Project Officer, Mark Phillips on 0427 192 060 or via email, mark.phillips4@sa.gov.au.
Development of the Wyndgate Plan is part of the Coorong, Lower Lakes and Murray Mouth Recovery Project vegetation program, funded by the South Australian and Australian Governments.
